D360 launches Bristow Global Media kids unscripted series It's My Party!

TORONTO, CANADA (June 28, 2018) - Ahead of the Children’s Media Conference (CMC) in Sheffield next week, Distribution360 (D360) is pleased to announce the acquisition of the Bristow Global Media series It’s My Party!which celebrates cultural diversity and embraces inclusivity.

From Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, and Hanukkah to Kwanzaa and Mexico’s Day of the Dead, viewers are taken on a fascinating journey of discovery into different cultural celebrations seen from a kid’s perspective. Each episode pairs up two kids who have never met; one acts as the party host introducing the other–their VIP guest–to their family’s cultural celebration. The two newfound friends jump in feet first, exploring the origins and meaning behind the traditions, participating in a series of challenges and games linked to the food, fashion and festivities of the dynamic celebrations, which culminate in a lively performance by both kids.

Commissioned by Canadian pubcaster TVOKids, the 13 x 22’ It’s My Party!is an entertaining celebration of diversity for kids at a time when more positivity is sorely needed. Kids producers and broadcasters have long supported diversity and put that on screen for kids to see, but It’s My Party!is unique in that it is unscripted. Scripting the inclusivity message and casting for diversity has been the norm, but It’s My Party!puts the message into action with a real-world cast of kids from all different backgrounds who each want to share their family’s culture and traditions.

When Bristow Global Media shared this series with us it was a no brainer. It’s My Party! is the perfect antidote to all the negative news around the world giving kids (and all of us) anxiety. We need to be doing all we can to provide children with the tools to make inclusivity their normal. Celebrating and embracing our diversity is key to achieving this. We’re exceptionally happy to be adding this brilliant series to our catalogue and to start sharing it with buyers,” says Diane Rankin, SVP at D360.

Additionally, for localized versions, It's My Party! offers a fresh take on the swap-style format that has proven very successful through the years in grown-up TV.  D360 launched a kids formats business this past year, and It’s My Party! as a format fits perfectly into this catalogue that D360 is building which includes Just Like Mom & Dad, Snapshots and Treasure Champs, another series celebrating our cultural diversity.

DISTRIBUTION360 BRINGS FRESH FEEL GOOD FORMATS TO MIPTV

TORONTO, CANADA (March 14, 2018) - Distribution360 heads to MIPTV with fresh formats, including the launch of hit family game show Just Like Mom & Dad and a new modular approach to localising kids TV with the debut of series Treasure Champs.

Primetime family game show Just Like Mom & Dad is about fun questions and questionable baking! Shot in front of a live audience, each episode puts three parent/child teams to the test to see how well they really know each other across three rounds. Two fun-filled question rounds are designed to reveal what they know or don’t know about one another and the final round sees the kids baking up some truly disgusting ‘treats’ for their parents to taste, hoping their Mom or Dad will be able to identify which one was made by them, for the win. The team with the most points at the end gets to spin the prize wheel for a chance at going home with some amazing family prizes.

D360 will also debut Treasure Champs, a ground-breaking upper preschool series commissioned by Cbeebies that explores the positive values common to different faiths and cultures such as generosity, empathy and honesty. This engaging mixed media series features the adventures of Barry and Kari, two animated characters, who explore a different value – or ‘treasure’ – in each episode. Using a vibrant combination of timeless stories and folk tales, super catchy songs and live action segments featuring inspirational children, the endearing comedic characters introduce the value in a fun and relatable way.  Treasure Champs has been uniquely produced in that it can be licensed as a straight acquisition in its original version or as a modular format where the animated segments can be used alongside each featured ‘treasure’ and interlaced with local live action shoots to create a truly local original that is really targeted to a territory’s cultural stories and individual traditions.

Following this modular model, D360 is bringing marblemedia’s Splatalot to market as a format. The series features contestants (the Attackers) battling their way through a water-filled medieval castle against the Defenders in 3 rounds: Cross the Moat, Storm the Castle and Steal the Crown, in the pursuit of being the last person standing to be crowned King or Queen of the Kingdom. Pre-produced action sequences are available for acquisition to package with locally-shot host segments and a recent sale into the US was made using this model. A production hub opportunity also exists in Canada where the water logged castle stands - and producers marblemedia are currently in development on a family version where parents and kids will compete together and bring even greater splats and spills!

Also coming out this market is Leave it to the Designer – a format version of the hit series Leave it to Bryan from Si Entertainment which has run for 130 episodes across 6 seasons to date. In each ep, a homeowner enlists a designer to consider three projects they’d like done in their home but the catch is they only have the budget for one of them – andthey leave the designer to decide which one they will take on. In a unique hook, the choice is made on how the new design will affect their lifestyle and happiness in their home rather than it being about raising their property value.

“Programs with family and the home at the heart offer warmth, positive messaging and good clean fun. Putting parents and kids together on screen in Just Like Mom & Dad brings families together at home to watch on the sofa. And a series like Treasure Champs emphasizes how we are more the same than we are different, regardless of beliefs or culture; capturing a high concept in an entertaining way for younger kids”, says Diane Rankin, SVP International, D360.

Series Details:

  • Just Like Mom and Dad (20 x 30’), Family Game Show, Format: Primetime family game show featuring fun questions and questionable baking! The team with the most points at the end gets to spin the prize wheel for a chance at going home with some amazing family prizes. Produced by marblemedia, based on a format owned by Bell Media Inc.

  • Treasure Champs (30 x 15’) Upper Preschool Mixed Media, Modular Format: Preschool mixed media series that explores universal moral values common to different faiths and cultures. Each episode features the adventures of the loveable Barry and Kari, two animated characters who explore a different ‘treasure’ – like kindness, wisdom and perseverance - and what it means to live out those values. Using a vibrant and eclectic combination of timeless stories drawn from faith traditions and folktales, catchy songs and heart-warming real-life examples featuring inspirational children, the super cute comedic characters introduce the value in a fun and relatable way. “When you think about formats, you may not think about kids series,” says Diane Rankin, Distribution360’s Senior Vice President, International, “but kids broadcasters need local content too and simple live action formats can effectively and affordably solve that programming challenge.”
Among the format-friendly series that Distribution360 will be introducing to buyers at MIPCOM/MIPJunior is The School Run, following a freshly inked deal with UK producer Silver Bullet Entertainment and Snapshots, produced by Forte Entertainment for CBC Kids.
Produced for BBC Radio 1, The School Run (6 x 10 minutes) surprises a group of unsuspecting friends with a favourite musical celebrity waiting at the school gates to drive them home. Celebrities featured: Olly Murs, Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, Little Mix, The 1975 and The Vamps.
“What kid wouldn’t want to be driven to school by their favourite celebrity rather than their Mum or Dad? A super simple concept, executed brilliantly.”
Snapshots (6 x 30 minutes) is an unscripted live-action photography competition series where kids compete to take the best photo ever! In each episode three kids go head-to-head, armed with a passion for photography and an eye for the perfect shot, as they use all their skills and creativity to complete the challenges.

In mathXplosion (50 x 3 minutes, Live Action), magician Eric Leclerc turns “mathemagican” in this entertaining new short series that shares secrets from the not-so-hidden world of math, proving math really is everywhere! Each episode illuminates the big ideas in primary math that children are already learning to do in a fun, funny and very approachable way. Produced by GAPC Entertainment for TVOKids.
The Mystery Files (13 x 30 minutes, Live Action) - The adventure never stops for Kyla, E.B, and their Aunt Tilly after they inherit a mysterious set of boxes containing ancient objects from their great aunt Hermione. Opie’s Home (39 x 7 minutes) - Opie’s Home explores the fun of family life from a preschool point of view, following 4-year-old Opie as he plays, explores and discovers new things in and around his home. Episodes feature Opie’s day-to-day interactions at home, reading and playing with his family and neighbours, as well as his family routine before and after school.
